Crimson Desert’s Charting the Unknown expansion is now available on Xbox Series X|S, bringing new character quests, ocean exploration, expanded housing and a combat challenge to the game. The DLC launched on October 29, according to Xbox Wire, following a series of post-launch updates since Crimson Desert released in March.
The expansion adds three storylines centred on Kliff, Oongka and Damiane. Xbox Wire says the characters each set out on separate paths after the fight for the Greymanes and Pywel, encountering both returning and new allies and threats.
Sea travel and settlement options
Charting the Unknown opens up the Great Ocean of Pywel, allowing players to build a ship, sail across the sea and explore an underwater area containing ruins, treasure chests, creatures and mounts.
It also broadens several non-combat systems. The three central characters can build relationships with certain inhabitants of Pywel; Xbox Wire says these connections can develop into romance and marriage. The housing system now allows players to construct a home from the ground up, including its layout and structural elements such as walls and windows.
Select liberated castles can also become player-owned spaces. Their courtyards and interiors can be decorated, while certain facilities, including restaurants and smithies, can be leased and managed. Players can assign equipment and comrades, choose goods to sell and build a facility’s recognition.
Story completion gates some additions
The Garden of Trials is the expansion’s combat-focused activity, sending players through boss encounters from their adventures in Pywel. PC Gamer reports that completing the main story is required to unlock the Garden of Trials, as well as the new story quests for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane. Its report describes the DLC as adding systems and activities to the existing world rather than functioning as a single focused story expansion.
Before Charting the Unknown, an August update, Patch Version 2.00, added story material and expanded voice-over and language support. Xbox Wire said that update and the preceding post-launch additions were released under the Crimson Desert Enhanced name.
Xbox is also offering a five-hour trial of the Crimson Desert base game for Xbox players from October 29 through January 6. The supplied material does not state the price of Charting the Unknown, identify whether the DLC is available on platforms beyond Xbox Series X|S, or detail the specific main-story milestones needed for every feature.
